Yes, dont bleach...I am going to color my hair myself for the first time do you have any advice?
Just be very careful to cover all of your scalp and leave the color in for long enough. Also, so a patch test for allergies. A flat iron is fine, just be careful about the heat and with your skin.
Even if it does cost more, i would still do it at a salon. they are professionals, and you don't want to do something wrong.
coloring your hair darker at home is fine but if you intend to go lighter or red you need to go to a professional.

make sure you do a test first. the color on the box isn't always the color you'll get.
First of all, when u buy the hair color, u need to test whether you are allergy to chemical, put some behind your ear and leave on for a night. If your skin turn red or feel itchy, U have to try to buy other hair color product(Is advisable to get chemical free hair color product if not will cause damages your hair).

If you want to have a smooth straight hair for temporary. After you wash your hair, semi dry your hair(Not too wet) and put hair mouse on your hair then you use the flat iron, it will turn well
If at all possible, get a friend to help out, since this is your first time.

Here are some steps for you that you might find helpful.

1. Brush your hair thoroughly. You want to get any loose ones, and you're going to be combing through; this will make sense in a few steps.

2. Section your hair into about 4 sections and hold them with a clip.

3. Put face cream around your ears and hairline to avoid color spills.

4. I usually just take my top off to dye my hair, so as not to have to pull a shirt over my head. An old flannel shirt works if you don't have the privacy to walk around in your place half-naked for half an hour. I would recommend also that you put a towel over your shoulders to avoid getting dye on your back.

5. Now it's time to dye! Do one section at a time, starting at the back. As you apply the dye, use a comb to make sure each strand is saturated. Continue til it's all done.

Now is a good time to have your friend double-check and make sure you've gotten each and every strand.

Finally, make sure you have enough dye. The last time I dyed my hair, I used a new brand and it was a smaller bottle than what I am accustomed to and I had to go out and get a second kit. My hair is comes down past my shoulders; so that might be a helpful guide for you.

As for the flat iron, heck yes it's okay to do at home. I would recommend you get a heat-styling product, some are enhance by heat, others just protect your hair. Any time you apply heat to your hair, you risk damage, so do what you can to minimize. I'm a fan of Sally Beauty; they can recommend something to you.
