The pros and cons of + and - formats, hard drives etc would also be helpful.I want to copy VCR tapes to DVD. What advice can you give regarding suitable equipment?
Ideally you need a TV to MPEG card.
I use the Happuage PVR range (e.g. PVR-150), but ATI and others do similar cards which have received good (sometimes better) reviews.
Usually they come with software aimed at doing exactly what you want.
Regarding harddrives...... get the biggest you can!!
Regarding formats. the Hauppauge cards only produce MPEG 2 which is the standard DVD format.
Other cards can produces MPEG4/DIVX which saves a lot of space BUT this is not standard DVD and will not play on the *majority* of DVD players.I want to copy VCR tapes to DVD. What advice can you give regarding suitable equipment?
have had good success transfering vcr tapes into my computer and making DVD+R disks.
I used the cable input on my ATI card - you could do the same with any tv tuner card that has coax (for cable tv input) simply hookup the vcr and ';record'; the show or in this case tape.
I used WinXP Multimedia to do it , although Roxio 8 also offers this ability.
fairly simple , just time consuming going from vcr to computer , then computer to dvd.
Check your local yellowpages there could be someone in your town that offers this service
If you can afford it, you can save time and hassle by getting a combo VCR/DVR machine. It copies tapes at one touch of a button.
